{"id":975,"date":"2009-11-16T20:44:32","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T02:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/?p=975"},"modified":"2009-11-16T20:44:32","modified_gmt":"2009-11-17T02:44:32","slug":"building-partisan-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2009\/11\/16\/building-partisan-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Building partisan cities (?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following up on the current Republican assertion that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=961\">what is urban cannot also be local<\/a>, there&#8217;s been a lot more discussion today concerning cities and their political leanings.<\/p>\n<p>The Overhead Wire asserts that building cities &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/theoverheadwire.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/hippocrates-madisonis.html\">shouldn&#8217;t be a partisan issue.<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 There&#8217;s certainly something to be said for that &#8211; as adding density is probably one of the most obvious ways to embrace the free market.\u00a0 Likewise is the recognition that all transportation modes are subsidized, and rail transit is the most effective means of transport in urban areas.\u00a0 There are plenty of things within the urban condition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2009\/11\/12\/streetfilms-bill-lind-a-conservative-voice-for-transit\/\">for conservatives to like<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"560\" height=\"339\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"flashvars\" value=\"config=http:\/\/www.streetfilms.org\/config.js?post_id=20681\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.streetfilms.org\/wp-content\/plugins\/flowplayer_wp\/flowplayer\/flowplayer.swf?g\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Conversely, Yonah Freemark takes a look at the results from the most recent Presidential race, showing that the voting patterns for people living in more dense areas just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetransportpolitic.com\/2009\/11\/16\/building-cities-it-turns-out-is-a-partisan-issue\/\">don&#8217;t show much bi-partisanship<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The contrast is even more remarkable in the counties on the limits of typical density; America&#8217;s big cities are quite blue.<\/p>\n<p>The larger point, however, is that national partisan divides and cleavages don&#8217;t apply all that well to local issues.\u00a0 There are numerous politicians that are certainly progressive on national social and economic issues, but wouldn&#8217;t be on the forefront of progressive urban policy.\u00a0 Likewise, business-oriented leaders like Mike Bloomberg (regardless of his party affiliation) are certainly progressive at the local level. Guys like Bill Lind (from the video above) and the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reconnectingamerica.org\/public\/stories\/881\">Paul Weyrich<\/a> emphasize the points.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s certainly a conservative niche in urban areas that could be carved out, but it&#8217;s not clear that Republicans want to do the carving.\u00a0 When Jim Oberstar&#8217;s draft transportation bill is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Research\/SmartGrowth\/wm2693.cfm\">labeled as<\/a> an &#8220;exercise in lifestyle modification,&#8221; or that transit opponents argue that advocates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isthmus.com\/isthmus\/article.php?article=27438\">want to force everyone into Soviet housing<\/a>, it&#8217;s clear that they don&#8217;t care to take that step.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following up on the current Republican assertion that what is urban cannot also be local, there&#8217;s been a lot more discussion today concerning cities and their political leanings.
