How DC stacks up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mr_t_in_dc\/1782961516\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2042\/1782961516_b4ecb57194.jpg?resize=200%2C143\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bike-pgh.org\/2009\/09\/2008-city-commuting-trends-are-in-how-does-pittsburgh-stack-up-nationally\/\">Bike Pittsburgh<\/a>, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2009\/10\/09\/fun-with-data-how-workers-commute\/\">Streetsblog<\/a>, has some great, sortable data of how various cities stack up on the transportation aspects of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cityblock.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/07\/commute-flows\/\">recently released<\/a> American Community Survey data.\u00a0\u00a0 Bike PGH provides the context, ranking cities based on their percentages using transit, walking, biking, etc.\u00a0 Looking at how DC stacks up against the other major cities in the United States gives a great deal of perspective as to how we&#8217;re doing as a city.<\/p>\n<p>Again, remember that these are commute trips only, and for city residents only.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to understand the limitations of the data, but this is an even comparison for all the cities involved.\u00a0 Obviously, this is still not an apples to apples comparison, as many &#8216;newer&#8217; sunbelt cities are still aggressively expanding their city boundaries via annexation, while cities like DC remain both constrained by static political boundaries and surrounded by substantially urban jurisdictions (Arlington, Alexandria, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, taking all of the statistics together gives a good sense of how DC stacks up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biking commute mode share:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Portland, OR &#8211; 6.0%<\/li>\n<li>Minneapolis, MN &#8211; 4.3%<\/li>\n<li>Seattle, WA &#8211; 2.9%<\/li>\n<li>Sacramento, CA &#8211; 2.7%<\/li>\n<li>San Francisco, CA &#8211; 2.7%<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Washington, DC &#8211; 2.3%<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Oakland, CA &#8211; 2.1%<\/li>\n<li>Tucson, AZ &#8211; 2.0%<\/li>\n<li>Albuquerque, NM &#8211; 1.8%<\/li>\n<li>Boston, MA &#8211; 1.6%<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Walking commute mode share:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Boston, MA &#8211;
