{"id":476,"date":"2009-08-23T23:00:49","date_gmt":"2009-08-24T03:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cityblock.wordpress.com\/?p=476"},"modified":"2009-08-23T23:00:49","modified_gmt":"2009-08-24T03:00:49","slug":"wires-schmires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2009\/08\/23\/wires-schmires\/","title":{"rendered":"Wires schmires."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jarrett (keeper of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humantransit.org\/\">Human Transit<\/a>) is off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humantransit.org\/2009\/08\/trainspotting-and-busspotting-in-europe.html\">gallivanting around<\/a> in Europe.\u00a0 His travels took him to Vienna, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humantransit.org\/2009\/08\/vienna-do-the-wires-ruin-it.html\">he noticed <\/a>that the city <strong>a)<\/strong> has lots of overhead wires for streetcars, trams, and the like, yet <strong>b)<\/strong> somehow is still a pretty place.\u00a0 How can this possibly be true?\u00a0 DC&#8217;s laws state otherwise!<\/p>\n<p>Not only does Vienna have streetcar\/tram wires, they also have all of their streetlights suspended by wires as well.\u00a0 Streets with both have two layers of wires:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In case it&#8217;s not completely clear, the wires carrying the lights are a meter or two above the heavier wire for the streetcar. \u00a0In a way, having two layers of wires seems a little more obstrusive than just having a whole lot of wires at one layer &#8212; e.g. under a switch in a trolleybus system. \u00a0But it&#8217;s not a huge difference, and the point is, Vienna is definitely getting by. \u00a0People even photograph the streetscape, and then eat in a restaurant, and then go spend money in the shops, as though they don&#8217;t even notice all those horrible wires.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How can they survive under such dire conditions?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jarrett (keeper of Human Transit) is off gallivanting around in Europe.\u00a0 His travels took him to Vienna, where he noticed that the city a) has lots of overhead wires for streetcars, trams, and the like, yet b) somehow is still a pretty place.\u00a0 How can this possibly be true?\u00a0 DC&#8217;s laws state otherwise!
