You get your city&#8217;s updated population estimates from the US Census Bureau as part of the state-level estimates. And <a href=\"https:\/\/dc.gov\/release\/washington-dc-population-closing-700000\">DC&#8217;s growth has continued apace<\/a>, now estimated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/DC\">693,972 residents<\/a> within the District in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>I moved to DC a decade ago, and since then the city&#8217;s population has increased by more than 100,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>While the pace of population growth is remarkably steady (netting about 10,000 people a year) even as the pace slows, the contributors to that growth have changed dramatically. Domestic migration substantially declined after the post-recession peak. International migration steadily increased.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Slowdown of growth in DC seems to be from a drop off in domestic migration. The impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/washington-dc\/news\/multifamily\/dc-apartment-landlords-prepare-for-heaviest-quarter-of-supply-on-record-73037\">additional housing supply<\/a> in the face of increased demand over the past decade has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costar.com\/News\/Article\/CoStar-Market-Insights-Wave-of-New-Apartment-Supply-in-DC-Finally-Having-Effect-on-Rents\/190935\">finally started to appear in the asking rents<\/a> and other concessions from landlords.<\/p>\n<p>On a personal note, these stats aren&#8217;t just abstractions for me. 2017 was a big year for me and my family; since February, we&#8217;re contributors to that natural increase in DC&#8217;s population. Parenting sure isn&#8217;t conducive to an increase in blogging.
