{"id":3501,"date":"2013-12-14T12:54:50","date_gmt":"2013-12-14T17:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/?p=3501"},"modified":"2013-12-14T17:26:43","modified_gmt":"2013-12-14T22:26:43","slug":"signs-that-the-silver-line-is-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2013\/12\/14\/signs-that-the-silver-line-is-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Signs that the Silver Line is coming&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As WMATA prepares to take control of the first phase of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dullesmetro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Line<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mwaa.com\/380.htm\" target=\"_blank\">from MWAA<\/a> (with the exact handover date <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/dr-gridlock\/wp\/2013\/12\/02\/mwaa-annouces-more-silver-line-delays\/\" target=\"_blank\">yet to be determined<\/a>), signage for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/dr-gridlock\/wp\/2013\/11\/05\/silver-line-more-than-five-new-stations\/\" target=\"_blank\">new service<\/a> is starting to pop-up around the system. WMATA is trying to raise awareness about the new service and new track with <a href=\"http:\/\/silverlinemetro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">a dedicated website<\/a>; you can see a presentation to the WMATA Board on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/about_metro\/board_of_directors\/board_docs\/110413_4ASilverLineActivationPlan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Line activation plan here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some rail stations <a href=\"http:\/\/transitmaps.tumblr.com\/post\/64801135201\/pentagon-city-strip\" target=\"_blank\">include strip maps<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/39017545@N02\/4583314182\/in\/set-72157619033353623\/\" target=\"_blank\">the station wall signage<\/a> and on <a href=\"http:\/\/greatergreater.com\/images\/201107\/150942.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">platform pylons<\/a>. Others include backlit strip maps located above the on-platform map\/advertising panels. Photo by the author.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The current signage makes for an odd asymmetry, where the westbound signs clearly preserve space for a future (SV) bullet and destination below the current Orange and Blue line termini. The eastbound signs, however, looked more evenly spaced, perhaps anticipating the end of Orange Line &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/about_metro\/news\/rushplus.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Rush Plus<\/a>&#8216; service to Largo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/about_metro\/riders_advisory_council\/minutes\/docs\/Silver%20Line%20DRAFT,%20March%206,%202013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">to be replaced by Silver Line service<\/a>.
