{"id":3374,"date":"2013-10-10T22:20:51","date_gmt":"2013-10-11T02:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/?p=3374"},"modified":"2013-10-10T22:20:51","modified_gmt":"2013-10-11T02:20:51","slug":"metros-stainless-steel-future-metro-center-sales-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/10\/metros-stainless-steel-future-metro-center-sales-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Metro&#8217;s stainless steel future &#8211; Metro Center sales office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another element of WMATA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2794\" target=\"_blank\">stainless steel future<\/a> has emerged from behind the plywood: part of the newly renovated Metro Center sales office.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=3276\" target=\"_blank\">Metro&#8217;s new entrance to the Rosslyn station<\/a> (now <a href=\"http:\/\/greatergreaterwashington.org\/post\/20395\/new-entrance-mezzanine-open-at-rosslyn-metro-station\/\" target=\"_blank\">open to the public<\/a>, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/beyonddc\/10138842714\/\" target=\"_blank\">some pictures<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/beyonddc.com\/log\/?p=5932\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Malouff<\/a>), the sales office is located within the shell of the existing Harry Weese station vault, showing what we might expect from future <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2794\" target=\"_blank\">large-scale interventions<\/a> to stations. Photo by author.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Currently, only the portion of the structure outside of the fare gates is open, featuring four ticket windows. The remaining windows, inside the paid fare area, are still under construction. CC image from Wayan Vota<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Replacing the sales office was one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/stimulus\/project_details.cfm?P=Metro%20Center%20Sales%20Office%20Replacement\" target=\"_blank\">Metro&#8217;s &#8216;shovel ready&#8217; stimulus projects<\/a>, upgrading the booth to include a number of new features, including beefed up security complete with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/signature-renovations.com\/secure-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\">armor plating<\/a>. (!)<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, SmarTrip cards are now available at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/fares\/smartrip\/smartrip_load.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">wide range of retail locations<\/a> as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\/fares\/purchase\/vending.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">vending machines<\/a> in each station. These machines are a stopgap until WMATA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatransit.com\/files\/Conf12\/Presentations\/Terri%20Anomnachi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">next-gen fare payment system<\/a> (dubbed NEPP) is up and running. New fare vending machines like those in use in other systems around the world will combine the roles of the current SmarTrip vending machines and the existing farecard machines. \u00a0More and more transactions are automated, including automatic loading of SmartBenefits and automatic replenishment of card value when your balance gets too low. Some older paper passes and fare products are now available on SmarTrip, the NEPP promises more opportunities for this. All of these developments bode for increased automation and less of a role for the old-fashioned sales office.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, you never know what kind of circumstances might emerge to beef up the need for all those ticket windows; perhaps the 2017 Presidential Inauguration will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtoncitypaper.com\/blogs\/citydesk\/2009\/01\/16\/everyone-wants-their-obama-metro-card\/\" target=\"_blank\">produce the same &#8216;insane lines&#8217;<\/a> for commemorative cards as 2009. <em>Maybe.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another element of WMATA&#8217;s stainless steel future has emerged from behind the plywood: part of the newly renovated Metro Center sales office.
