CC image from Harvey Yau.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More links in relation to yesterday&#8217;s post on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2866\" target=\"_blank\">future of Penn Station in New York<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Second Ave. Sagas<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/secondavenuesagas.com\/2013\/05\/30\/from-four-architects-four-ideas-for-penn-stations-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">approaches skeptically<\/a>, but with a nice compendium of the various renderings from the four architectural teams.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile (and also from Second Ave. Sagas) there is <a href=\"http:\/\/secondavenuesagas.com\/2013\/05\/30\/a-sandy-assist-for-the-gateway-tunnel\/\" target=\"_blank\">modest progress<\/a> toward new Hudson river tunnels.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Municipal Arts Society<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=srFXrIg6iEk&amp;list=PLZttV1Q7CxhQ8y2QZ0JmxX7DM80XdZonV\" target=\"_blank\">posted video of the presentations<\/a> and the panel discussion from yesterday&#8217;s event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the videos from MAS, particularly in the panel discussion segment of the event moderated by <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/k\/michael_kimmelman\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Kimmelman<\/a>, it is heartening to hear many of the issues I raised in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2866\" target=\"_blank\">yesterday&#8217;s post<\/a> (written without the aid of hearing the presentations) acknowledged, if not satisfactorily resolved. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/node\/2660\/project-page\" target=\"_blank\">SHoP team<\/a> in particular at least addressed the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Urbablurb\/status\/340156705440665600\" target=\"_blank\">more practical concerns<\/a> of cost, safety, and infrastructure. Reactions amongst transit advocates were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarketUrbanism\/status\/340163375944327168\" target=\"_blank\">skeptical<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarketUrbanism\/status\/339828327613353984\" target=\"_blank\">but open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for SHoP (and for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecondAveSagas\/status\/339824154272477184\" target=\"_blank\">credibility of the entire process<\/a> as something more substantial than a hypothetical design exercise), these pragmatic and practical realities were dismissed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=3ACjpurBuzw&amp;list=PLZttV1Q7CxhQ8y2QZ0JmxX7DM80XdZonV#t=1650s\" target=\"_blank\">problems for policy wonks to solve<\/a>, implying they are beneath the work of the designers &#8211; all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=3ACjpurBuzw&amp;list=PLZttV1Q7CxhQ8y2QZ0JmxX7DM80XdZonV#t=1650s\" target=\"_blank\">while joking<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VishaanNYC\" target=\"_blank\">the one team<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=L_MhmYcHzCI&amp;list=PLZttV1Q7CxhQ8y2QZ0JmxX7DM80XdZonV#t=0s\" target=\"_blank\">at least acknowledging these realities<\/a> was not a &#8216;designer.&#8217;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More links in relation to yesterday&#8217;s post on the future of Penn Station in New York: Second Ave. Sagas approaches skeptically, but with a nice compendium of the various renderings from the four architectural teams.
