This also makes it easy to see the relative volume of Amtrak intercity trains and commuter trains, as well as a few freight movements per day north of Washington Union Station. Capacity improvements are needed to allow for a combination of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/ccurl\/453\/325\/Amtrak-Vision-for-the-Northeast-Corridor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">increased intercity<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/greatergreaterwashington.org\/post\/15924\/through-running-isnt-so-easy-for-marc-and-vre-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">commuter services<\/a> (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2436\" target=\"_blank\">even<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=2486\" target=\"_blank\">better<\/a>), and other bottlenecks are likely in need of <a href=\"http:\/\/longbridgeproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">greater capacity<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdland.com\/dc\/va-ave-tunnel.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">freight expansion<\/a>\u00a0on adjacent corridors.<\/p>\n<p>In other Amtrak news, Systemic Failure takes note of the US rail regulatory apparatus <a href=\"http:\/\/systemicfailure.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/21\/fra-not-cooperating-on-acela-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">continuing to shoot itself in the foot<\/a> on even allowing efficient high speed rail and learning from everyone else around the world that has already done this hard work. The FRA rejected Amtrak&#8217;s reasoning below, with emphasis added <a href=\"http:\/\/systemicfailure.wordpress.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">by Drunk Engineer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The assumption that the standards simplify the design process of the equipment and would save $2,000,000 per train set is false.
