{"id":1755,"date":"2010-08-30T21:04:32","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T02:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/?p=1755"},"modified":"2011-02-20T16:21:17","modified_gmt":"2011-02-20T21:21:17","slug":"low-impact-development-near-the-navy-yard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2010\/08\/30\/low-impact-development-near-the-navy-yard\/","title":{"rendered":"Low impact development near the Navy Yard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Near the soon to be opened and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdland.com\/dc\/index.cfm?id=3310\" target=\"_blank\">fantastic Park at the Yards<\/a>, there&#8217;s a lot of new <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low_impact_development\" target=\"_blank\">low-impact development<\/a> infrastructure.\u00a0 These <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bioretention\" target=\"_blank\">bioretention<\/a> areas should be a great example of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=789\" target=\"_blank\">new kind<\/a> of both urban and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=1027\" target=\"_blank\">environmentally sustainable infrastructure<\/a> can be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1757\" title=\"IMG00071\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg?resize=620%2C465\" alt=\"IMG00071\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00071.jpg?w=1250 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are not ordinary tree boxes.\u00a0 Instead of draining into a standard storm sewer, these gutters drain into the tree boxes, where stormwater then naturally drains into the ground instead of into a storm sewer.\u00a0 This reduces the amount of water entering the <a href=\"http:\/\/dcwater.com\/wastewater_collection\/css\/default.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">combined storm and sanitary sewer<\/a>, and thus can help reduce the number of combined sewer overflow (CSO) events.\u00a0 Since the combined sewer system mixes storm water and regular sewage, <a href=\"http:\/\/dcwater.com\/wastewater_collection\/css\/default.cfm#when\" target=\"_blank\">substantial rainfall<\/a> will force the system to overflow into area rivers, dumping raw sewage mixed with stormwater directly into the Anacostia and Potomac.<\/p>\n<p>From the street side:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1758\" title=\"IMG00072\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg?resize=620%2C465\" alt=\"IMG00072\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IMG00072.jpg?w=1250 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Storm water will slowly absorb into the ground, aided by the various plants soils that can capture pollutants though the process of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biofilter\" target=\"_blank\">biofiltration<\/a>.\u00a0 Look at other rain gardens and tree boxes under construction &#8211;
