Jantzen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The World Cup is underway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>England in Roo-ins: <\/strong>The cup means <a href=\"http:\/\/dcist.com\/2010\/06\/weekend_gallery_soccer_in_the_circl.php\" target=\"_blank\">large gatherings<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/greatergreaterwashington.org\/post.cgi?id=6162\" target=\"_blank\">of fans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=idLG6jh23yE\" target=\"_blank\">sweet<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3Zd_khk6zXo\" target=\"_blank\">commercials<\/a> (even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tsizQdNKhGg\">older ones<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infrastructure: <\/strong>Jarrett Walker takes a look at some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humantransit.org\/2010\/06\/johannesburg-gautrain-open-in-time-for-world-cup.html\" target=\"_blank\">transit improvements<\/a> for South Africa, building off the notion that large scale events like the World Cup can provide a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=1376\" target=\"_blank\">kind of focus<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=1507\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure investments<\/a> and other benefits that will last well after the conclusion of the games.\u00a0 Infrastructurist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infrastructurist.com\/2010\/06\/07\/world-cup-infrastructure-how-sports-can-supercharge-a-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\">looks at the stadiums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last week&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncpc.gov\/ncpc\/Main%28T2%29\/Public%20Participation%28Tr2%29\/Public%20Participation%28Tr3%29\/upcomingEvents\/BurnhamFilm.html\" target=\"_blank\">screening on the Mall<\/a> of PBS&#8217; documentary of Daniel Burnham focused a great deal on his role in the creation of the White City at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World%27s_Columbian_Exposition\" target=\"_blank\">1893 Columbian Exposition<\/a> &#8211; another special event that focused a great deal of infrastructure investment &#8211; highlights two issues: the temporary and often fleeting nature of these kinds of events, as well as the ability to focus investments in one area.\u00a0 Chicago focused on a park, Vancouver&#8217;s investments in one region &#8211; South Africa&#8217;s investments are spread across an entire country.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Avent&#8217;s post on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryanavent.com\/blog\/?p=2321\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure investments in mature cities<\/a> versus growing ones also gets at the comparison between Chicago in 1893 and Vancouver in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representative Space: <\/strong>Mammoth takes a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2010\/06\/as-built-on-the-pitch\/\" target=\"_blank\">soccer as a representation of urban space<\/a> &#8211; a diagram of the strategies for using space.\u00a0 Very interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Framing the Issue: <\/strong>Cap&#8217;n Transit <a href=\"http:\/\/capntransit.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/how-surface-subway-can-hurt-real-subway.html\" target=\"_blank\">disagrees with the idea<\/a> of framing bus operating improvements in New York as a &#8216;surface subway.&#8217;\u00a0 This is an important tension &#8211; selling a project to various stakeholders is vitally important if you ever want to actually get something done, but overselling the benefits of some projects can dangerous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Home Ownership and NIMBYism: <\/strong>Ryan Avent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryanavent.com\/blog\/?p=2322\" target=\"_blank\">dissects a recent paper<\/a> from the Federal Reserve on home ownership and &#8216;investment&#8217; in the community, both literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s clearly right that homeowners take an active interest in local  policy in an effort to protect and enhance local services and the value  of their homes. But that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that homeowners are  generating societal benefits&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also not clear that homeowners are necessarily maximizing the value  of their properties. Homeownership, as I\u2019ve mentioned before, is an  undiversified, highly-leveraged, immobile, illiquid financial bet.  Having made such a bet, homeowners become very risk averse. We can  imagine situations in which new developments are likely to benefit local  homeowners and increase the value of their properties, but have  benefits uncertain enough that there is a small but real probability of a  negative effect on local property values. Highly risk-averse homeowners  may opt to oppose the project, despite the good chance that they\u2019d  benefit from it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Balancing individual and collective interests is one of the key tensions in any urban environment.\u00a0 That tension also illuminates the problems of pushing home ownership as the be-all and end-all for one&#8217;s living situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Politically Correct: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewashcycle.com\/2010\/06\/bike-lanes-are-politically-correct.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bike lanes<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Couch Criticism: <\/strong>Architecture critics <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.buildllc.com\/2010\/04\/couch-cushion-architecture-a-critical-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\">take on forts<\/a> made of couch cushions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Cup is underway.
