{"id":1353,"date":"2010-02-11T09:46:29","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T15:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/?p=1353"},"modified":"2010-02-11T10:46:45","modified_gmt":"2010-02-11T16:46:45","slug":"snow-perspective-in-graph-form","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/11\/snow-perspective-in-graph-form\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow perspective, in graph form."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since we&#8217;ve now eclipsed the seasonal record, it&#8217;s worth noting how unusual it is for DC to get lots of snow in a season, to say nothing about snow storms coming back to back.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/2010\/02\/making_history_snowfall_record.html\" target=\"_blank\">look at the history<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/2010\/02\/making_history_snowfall_record.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/images\/dcwinter09-10.jpg?resize=450%2C270\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;re now well above that blue star for the 1898-99 season record.\u00a0 As Gabe Klein <a href=\"http:\/\/thekojonnamdishow.org\/shows\/2010-02-10\/washington-digs-out-part-ii\" target=\"_blank\">noted on Kojo yesterday<\/a>, you can&#8217;t budget for those intervening years and then expect to deal with the extraordinary snowfalls.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, there are physical limits to how fast you can remove snow, and when the snow is accumulating faster than that rate, you&#8217;ve got a problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>City Paper<\/strong> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtoncitypaper.com\/blogs\/citydesk\/2010\/02\/11\/has-your-street-been-plowed-a-survey-of-anc-commissioners\/\" target=\"_blank\">survey of ANC commissioners<\/a>, asking about their street conditions.\u00a0 Gary Thompson has some good perspective on snow removal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Gary Thompson<\/strong>, of ANC 3G, who lives in the 2800 block of Northampton Street NW: &#8220;My own street&#8217;s been plowed very well,&#8221; he says. &#8220;They&#8217;ve done an excellent job plowing, especially under the circumstances. There have been a few forgotten streets here or there, like a dead end culdesac,&#8221; but the city is catching up. &#8220;People are very quick to complain,&#8221; he says. &#8220;But Mother Nature is what it is. It&#8217;s a pretty powerful storm.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ben Thomas, not so much:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ben Thomas<\/strong>, of ANC 7E, who lives in the 1100 block of Chaplin Street SE: A plow came by sometime last night, he reports (the second of two times a plow has made an appearance during D.C.&#8217;s three snowstorms this season). &#8220;They don&#8217;t really do anything but pile the snow against peoples&#8217; cars,&#8221; he says.
