Others cry waste. But until Saturday, no D.C. streetcars were actually in America\u2014they were in the Czech Republic, of all places.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if Ruth has noticed, but the Europeans tend to build these things better than we do (at least right now).\u00a0 Of course, it won&#8217;t always be that way &#8211; see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedstreetcar.com\/\">United Streetcar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/reader\/view\/#search\/streetcar\/0\">news broke that the cars were here! <\/a>Why this was news is kind of peculiar. Do people care when a new, updated version of the METRO car arrives?\u00a0 A press release from the District Department of Transportation noted the length of the streetcars journey\u20134,200 miles. It detailed what kind of measures were taken\u2014a \u201cwax coating\u201d was applied \u201cover the external surface of the street car\u201d\u2014to prepare the streetcars for their voyage. It featured an enthusiastic quote from DDOT director <strong>Gabe Klein<\/strong>, suggesting that D.C. residents were just dying to see the vehicles up close and personal\u2013 as if they were the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/POLITICS\/04\/14\/first.dog\/index.html\">newest presidential pets.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll fully admit that I&#8217;m far nerdier about this than most, but I <em>am<\/em> just dying to see these vehicles up close and personal.\u00a0 And I do like riding in new Metro cars.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexblock.net\/blog\/?p=661\">throw in my two cents<\/a> about their design.\u00a0 I know I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/dcist.com\/2008\/01\/the_future_of_m_1.php\">not the only one<\/a>, either.<\/p>\n<p>So, is this really newsworthy?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 But the beauty of this is how DDOT&#8217;s managed to use some social media to get the news out to a community that really wants to hear it and see the pictures.\u00a0 Little things like this make a big difference.\u00a0 Metro, for example, could use a little good publicity right now.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ed0gbAfLnEg\">Positive waves<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our first streetcars are here.
